Skunk2 K-series timing chain tensioner for K20A

Honda isn’t perfect. As good as its K-series engine is, its tensioner has its problems. But Skunk2 has the solution—its Pro Series Timing Chain Tensioner. It’s never been safer to run big cams in your K.

Timing chain tensioners are simple but important. Take Honda’s K-series, for example. The crankshaft keeps the intake side of the chain tight but it’s the tensioner’s job to do so for the exhaust side. Without it, the cams would start spinning but ultimately just sit there doing nothing. Honda’s design incorporates both spring pressure and engine oil pressure. At low engine speeds, when oil pressure is low, the tensioner’s internal spring moves its piston toward the timing chain guide, reducing chain slack. As engine speed and oil pressure rise, the spring relaxes and oil pressure pushes against the piston. But Honda’s spring doesn’t always work as you’d expect, and excess tensioner piston travel and timing chain slack when oil pressure is low is common—especially during start-up when the spring is left to control the exhaust cam slamming shut all by itself. All of this can lead to engine damage, even on unmodified engines. Worst of all, you’ll never know any of this is happening until it’s too late.

The problem is intensified once camshafts with aggressive closing ramps and/or stiffer valve springs are added. When the exhaust valves close while idling or during start-up, the tensioner’s piston slams back toward its housing, which causes its teeth to bash against its ratcheting mechanism. This isn’t a good thing since the ratchet and piston teeth are the only things that prevent the piston from being pushed in too far, which would otherwise lead to a dangerously loose timing chain that can potentially jump teeth, so keeping it intact becomes even more important. Once the piston’s teeth wear down, the safety mechanism’s gone. Meanwhile, as the tensioner’s spring struggles to resist the exhaust camshaft’s closing motion, the timing chain continues to slack, which is obvious by its kinking in the upper region near the camshaft gears. All of this is caused by a spring that’s too weak to counteract the exhaust valves slamming shut and weak, undersized piston teeth that wear from repeated bashing against their ratcheting mechanism. Until now, the solution was to “add a click” to the OEM tensioner, which reduces tensioner piston travel but doesn’t solve the overall problem. Stiffer springs have also been experimented with, but neither solution addresses the bashing effect and potential for worn piston teeth.

Skunk2’s K-series Timing Chain Tensioner fixes all of this. Pro Series Tensioners are machined from high-quality 7075-aluminum, heat-treated, and feature stiffer, OEM-quality springs that prevent the exhaust camshaft from slamming shut at low engine speeds and eliminate chain slack, even under low oil pressure conditions where the factory spring would have been compromised. Skunk2’s tensioner also includes an upgraded 16mm diameter piston (1.5mm larger) with a larger ratcheting mechanism featuring deeper and wider, hardened-steel ratcheting teeth for extra protection—the ultimate fail-safe to ensure against excessive piston travel due to worn teeth. Skunk2’s tensioner also fits tightly against the timing chain guide to ensure against rotational movement, which can exert uneven load against the ratcheting teeth. Even the factory-designed oil passages and check valves are retained, which means the tensioner remains lubricated and pressurized just as Honda intended.

A strut bar or strut brace is a mostly aftermarket car suspension accessory used in conjunction with MacPherson struts on monocoque or unibody chassis to provide extra strength between the strut towers. With a MacPherson strut suspension system where the spring and shock absorber are combined in the one suspension unit, the entire vertical suspension load is transmitted to the top of the vehicle's strut tower, unlike a double wishbone suspension where the spring and shock absorber may share the load separately. In general terms, a strut tower in a monocoque chassis is a reinforced portion of the inner wheel well and is not necessarily directly connected to the main chassis rails. For this reason there is inherent flex within the strut towers relative to the chassis rails.

 A strut bar is designed to reduce this strut tower flex by tying two parallel strut towers together. This transmits the load of each strut tower during cornering via tension and compression of the strut bar which shares the load between both towers and reduces chassis flex.Performance: Resulting from the improved chassis rigidity (similar to that gained from a lower arm bar); may be improved steering precision under high load conditions (cornering and braking). Reduced understeer, tire wear and metal fatigue in the strut tower area may also be experienced.

Testing, Testing, and more Testing

All Hotchkis Sport Suspension components are tested and punished on our 600 ft. slalom, 200 ft. skid pad, and 14-turn Autocross course. Results from the ¼ mile acceleration and 60 to 0 mph braking tests are compiled. Complete data for stock and Hotchkis Sport Suspension equipped vehicles is gathered and evaluated. Performance gains are documented and any component not meeting our engineer's rigid standards of fit and performance are critiqued, redesigned, and retested.

BLitZ racing oil cooler kit

BLitz Racing Oil Cooler kit for Mitsubishi EVO X/Subaru STI Ver.10

Type RS features side-tank-type-core. Its large capacity tanks, high rigidity and tube type structure which allows more engine oil circulation will provide excellent cooling performance in racetrack driving.

Type RD features drawn-cup-type-core. This type of the core can be manufactured at lower cost, yet it will offer good cooling performance by using offset type inner fins. Type RD is recommended for those who drive their cars mainly on street, but still like to maintain optimum engine oil temperature at low cost.

• Defi BF tachometer

The Defi BF Tachometer in 80mm diameter tachometer comes in 9000rpm or 11000rpm scale reading. Although this tachometer can operate by itself without using control unit, it still features the same famous Opening and Ending ceremony as Defi-Link Meter BF series. If the Defi-Link Meter BF series gauges have been already installed in your car, this tachometer also synchronizes its needle movement at the Opening and Ending ceremony if the power is provided from the same location.

Dimmer function allows the illumination brightness to be adjusted in 5 steps for daytime driving and also in 5 steps for night driving. It will be linked with the park light (headlight) switch. The dimmer function can be also canceled, so it doesn't link with the park light switch.

Warning point can be set at 2 different points with the large external warning indicator lighting up green at first warning point and then in red at second warning point. This large external warning indicator can be positioned anywhere around the bezel.

All the functions can be set or controlled by using only 2 buttons. This external button switch unit can be positioned anywhere around the bezel or even detached from the unit and positioned away from the gauge. The switch unit lights up in white, amber red or blue according to the tachometer illumination colour.

This product doesn't require the CONTROL UNIT and will operate by itself

Depending on the particular size and position of the sway bar, oversteer and understeer can be modified.
